The recent arms case provided a sensation in town especially among the British community, and the revelation of German plote had the effect of making the Germans proceed with greater care. They have done so, but not with sufficient
care to keep their doings from reaching certain quarters from
which, it is hoped, their activities will be curtailed.
The Lauser Rifle,
At the time of the revolution in 1911, a certain
governor of a certain province, whose name we need not divulge for he has no connection with this story, purchased a
number of arms from a well-known German firm in the Settlement-
Messrs Carlowitz and Co., we believe. The Germans retained
a lien on these arms, the kauser rifle of the 1888 pattern,
Whether and quite recently regained possession of them, Messrs Carlowits and Co, have anything to do with this deal,
we do not know.
It became part of the German plot to see that these
rifles, along with others of the same pattern, were sent to
Cochin-China and to India, If they had acted directly their
little plot would have been discovered by the British
authorities,
